Jimmy Wales had zeer slechte week
Jimmy Wales heeft zijn gevoel voor humor nog niet verloren. Na een dramatisch verlopen week voor hem, waarin expliciete chats van hem werden geopenbaard en zijn uitgaven ten tijde van zijn periode bij Wikipedia uitgebreid in twijfel werden getrokken, stelt hij: “Being an Internet rock star is like being a regular rock star, except there is no sex and drugs”. De huidige CEO van zoekmachine en wikiservice Wikia ligt klaarblijkelijk niet wakker van alle dingen die gebeurd zijn: een seksschandaal, een schandaal waaruit zou blijken dat hij geld verkwist heeft aan wijn en dure vluchten, en een schandaal waaruit zou blijken dat hij in ruil voor geld teksten aanpastte.
Jimmy Wales had recentelijk een affaire met Rachel Marsden, een Canadese TV persoonlijkheid. Nadat de relatie werd verbroken, maakte zij een erotische chat openaar. Wired schrijft over de chats en de affaire: On Friday, reports surfaced that the married-but-divorcing internet icon Jimmy Wales carried on a clandestine affair with Marsden. Evidence of the affair included lurid IM transcripts. On Saturday, Wales posted a statement on the Wikipedia Foundations website (which he later moved to his personal site) denying that his actions went against Wikimedia Foundation’s policies, and stating that the affair had ended. Marsden responded by listing the clothes that he left at her house up for auction on eBay.
Marsden schreef onderstaande break-up email naar Jimmy Wales: I only have one thing to say to you: You are the sleazebag I always suspected you were, and should have listened more carefully to my gut instincts—and to my friends . No, in fact, you are much, much worse than I ever expected. You are an absolute creep, and it was a colossal mistake on my part to have gotten involved with you. Now, my suspicions about you have been proven dead-on. I never again want anything to do with you, and though I have every intention of putting all of this behind me ASAP (which will be VERY easy to do, given the disgusting reality), I am happy to tell anyone who happens to ask precisely what I think of you. There is nothing good left to say whatsoever. Goodbye Jimmy, and good riddance.

De commotie rondom de affaire heeft er nu toe geleid dat ook de uitgaven van Wales in twijfel worden getrokken: Former associates of Wales are using this scandal to bring up other worries they have about the organization at the foundation. Former Wikimedia exec Danny Wool, who left the foundation last year, wrote a blog post insinuating that Wales used the nonprofit foundation as his own personal piggy bank. Expenses that Wales tried to apply to the foundation included $300+ bottles of wine and visits to Moscow massage parlors, Wool alleges. According to Wool, the expenses got so out of hand that the Wikimedia Foundation took away Wales corporate credit card.
En, alsof dat niet erg genoeg is, werd Wales ook nog beticht van het veranderen van teksten op Wikipedia.org in ruil voor geld.
Inderdaad: het is net alsof Wales een rockster is, met alle bijbehorende schandalen en affaires. Zijn internet ondernemers dan toch de nieuwe rocksterren?
