Abstract

Technical development within the Wikimedia movement focuses on improving the experience and content of the projects. However, the Wikimedia promise is about sharing knowledge. Why should the Wikimedia projects be the endpoint of our content?

The Sum of All Knowledge (previously: Sum of all Paintings) is a website (found at http://sum.bykr.org) that offers an alternative way of browsing through Wikimedia content, with a special focus on using Wikidata to enhance the user experience. Because Wikidata offers categorization of every entity we can adapt the design of the page. Why should an article about a painting look the same as a biography?

Detailed proposal

This talk will give an overview of the project, with insights on the use of the Wikimedia API’s, including the technical challenges encountered. Audience interaction is appreciated very much. The whole project is open source and available on Github.

Track

Discovery or Exposure

Length of presentation/talk

Preferably 25 Minutes, but could be shortened to 10-15 minutes if needed.

Target audience

Technical attendees will feel right at home, but generally anyone interested in reuse of content might find this talk of use.
