Tutorial: Editing Wikidata

A hands-on session where you learn to edit Wikidata yourself.

Target audience: Wikipedians, GLAM staff with experience in collection registration...

Host(s)

Tutor of this session is Sandra Fauconnier.

Preparation

  • Please bring your own laptop!
  • A Wikimedia account is recommended when you want to participate and edit Wikidata. If you already have an account on another Wikimedia project, you should be OK. If not, you can create an account on Wikidata here.

Add this to your Wikidata user page ('Babel')

(adapt the numbers to reflect your own language knowledge; feel free to add or remove languages)

{{#babel:nl|en-3|fr-2|de-1|it-1|es-1}}

Documentation: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Babel
You can find the language codes here: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/List_of_Wikipedias

Wikidata in pretty (and sometimes 'in two directions'): Reasonator

https://tools.wmflabs.org/reasonator/

What can you work on?

Some examples for inspiration...

You can take a look if you can manually 'improve' one of the items in the following lists:

Related to the GLAM-WIKI Global South Challenge

Related to paintings

Famous architects! Their buildings might also have their own Wikipedia pages (and thus Wikidata items), but are these linked to their maker?

Random but fun stuff to do
